Infusion pumps from then until now
1951: Syringe pump invented by B. Braun
B. Braun invents the first infusion pump with the Syringe Pump. Its standard infusion rate is 1 ml / min. The new pump was designed to administer vasodilating drugs.
1959: Unita 12
Just eight years after the introduction of the world's first infusion pump, the Unita appeared on the market. This modern infusion pump featured 12 possible settings with adjustable infusion rates between 0.075 and 5 ml / min.
The drugs were administered from a 50-ml glass syringe.
1964: Perfusor®
The first Perfusor® featured 10 settings, with delivery rates ranging from 0.6 to 600 ml / min. The syringes delivered volumes from 5, 10, or 50-ml syringes.
One novelty was the integrated time indicator, which allowed one to read off the remaining infusion time.
1971: First Infusomat®
With its launch of the Infusomat® I, B. Braun gives the world its first large-volume infusion pump. Driven by a roller pump, the Infusomat® I could deliver infinitely variable volumes from 7 to 1000 ml.
1978: Infusomat® II
The Infusomat® II was equipped with an air-in-line detector and drop sensor. Once the air-in-line alarm appeared, the nurse received an immediate central alarm.
1982: Perfusor® secura
Perfusor® secura: Safety comes first with features like rate-independent delivery alarms and a precision drive.
1988: Perfusor® secura ft
The Perfusor® secura ft was the successor to Perfusor® secura and the first microprocessor-controlled syringe pump.
1992: Infusomat® fm
Infusomat® fm featured new options and used volume and time to calculate delivery rates. It is the first pump that can be integrated into a fluid manager system.
1994: Perfusor® fm
The Perfusor® fm had a bolus function as well as a PCA function, and ran on a semi-automatic drive. Its software stored the prescribed dose in its memory. Delivery rates that could be changed without flow interruptions were another advancement.
1994: First docking stations – a milestone in IV therapy
The first workstation could be generated. This pump was thus the precursor of Space and provided the trend for docking stations.
1997: Perfusor® compact
The Perfusor® compact was smaller and lighter than its older brother, the Perfusor® fm. The lightweight, battery-run compact syringe pump was well suited for mobile use. Fully charged, this pump could run up to 80 hours on one battery.
1998: Infusomat® fmS
The Infusomat® fmS got a complete facelift. The pump display was bigger than its precursor Infusomat® fm, which provided for more user-friendly handling.
2004: Infusomat® Space® and Perfusor® Space®
With its new Infusomat® Space® and Perfusor® Space®, B. Braun sets new standards in automated infusion technology, safety engineering, and data communications.
We generated the second workstation with a focus on the compressed size of the system as well as on the availability of functions leading to "one pump for all".
